Who said we never get proper winters anymore?

Horses, once the main source of power on farms were mostly replaced by tractors and combine harvesters in the twentieth century. Before snowploughs and gritters came into existence the horse was responsible for clearing the snow-bound roads. the two photographs above were taken in Hutton-Le Hole.

The photographs in this post are from the archive collection at Ryedale Folk Museum. Thery depict some of the tasks that were undertaken by horses such as ploughing, pulling a reaper and potato harvesting. Threshing was mainly done with the aid of a steam engine, but these were gradually phased out with tractors replacing them.

This gentleman is demonstrating how corn was threshed before the advent of the powered thresher.

Horses, once the main source of power on farms are now mainly used for leisure.

Here we see Fiona riding her horse and later the horse being shod by the farrier.

Sheep Shearing

Alan, a volunteer at the museum, has spent a year documenting life on Heygate Farm, Rosedale using black and white photographs. These five photographs show the Fosters shearing sheep. What they cannot depict is the hard toil involved, the sheep have to be manipulated by hand and are never very cooperative.

Shearing is an essential task with any flock. If the fleece was left on the sheep it would cause severe health problems for the animal. Blowfly, being the most common pest, lays its eggs in dirty wool, the eggs hatch and the maggots can literally eat the sheep alive. In Yorkshire this affliction is generally termed as being 'morked'.

In years gone by, the wool was the most valuable product to come from the sheep, nowadays the value of a fleece is very poor in comparison. From 1992-2007 the price for a fleece has varied from 60p-£1/ kg.
